On July 1st 1863, General Lee asked his Generals very politely that, if possible, to please occupy Culp's Hill. Being involved in other matters and the men being tired, an attempt at occupying Culp's Hill was not attempted. Turned out the General Lee was right about that hill and IF he had been more direct in his orders or IF other Generals had tried things may have turned out different back at Gettysburg in 1863.
I have had several incidences this week where people misinterpreted my words or expected me to use a kinder interpretation of their words. Words are funny things. You would expect them to mean one thing but even Webster has multiple meanings for the same word. So how are you supposed to know what a word means?
Take for example the word early. To a teenager early is Noon (if they are waking up) and it's Midnight (if they are going to bed).
At work I was asked to sign a letter by one of our many National partners in support of health care reform. They said the letter was neutral. We declined to sign on. Funny thing about political statements and contracts, words can mean many things. In contract you start with defining the words.
Is a peanut a nut?
Is a strawberry a berry?
Is early Noon?
Goodbye is not goodbye - its hello, safe journeys, I'll hear you again, or God's speed.
(Depending on what language you speak.)
